Mental health disorders are among the leading causes of disease burden in Rwanda. KMHRC was founded to address these challenges by providing specialized mental health services, especially in the context of the long-term effects of trauma from Rwanda’s history. Our services are aligned with national health strategies such as the National Strategy for Transformation (NST2) and Health Sector Strategic Plan V (HSSP-V), contributing to a healthier Rwanda.
Mental health issues are ranked among the top ten leading causes of disease in Rwanda, with significant risk factors including the long-lasting effects of the Genocide, chronic diseases, violence, and other socio-economic challenges. The prevalence of mental health problems remains high, with urban areas like Kigali reporting a particularly high incidence of mental health disorders. KMHRC was founded to respond to these pressing needs by providing specialized care and support.

Since its inception, KMHRC has been a leader in mental health care, working closely with the Ministry of Health, Rwanda Biomedical Centre, and other national and international partners to strengthen mental health services in Rwanda. Our work aligns with the National Strategy for Transformation (NST2) and the Health Sector Strategic Plan V (HSSP-V), ensuring that we contribute to the nation’s broader health and development goals.
